If you have a penis, you don’t get any say in women’s rights. The end. Why is it that men get to sit there and decide how to handle women and their bodies like we’re some alien species and a lower life form? I am not inferior to you. I am not a child. I am not your property. I am not your pet.

If I want to have sex before marriage, I will. If I want to use methods of contraception, I will. If I want to have a baby, I will. If I don’t want to have a baby, for any reason, I will not.

If a woman is mentally handicapped and is raped (which happens very frequently), and becomes pregnant as a result of that rape, she should not be put through that confusion and pain to bring a child into the world, only to most likely have that child taken to be adopted, or raised by her family.

If a woman is made unsafe as a result of a difficult pregnancy, she should not be forced to carry that baby to term, only to possibly die and lose that baby in the process.

If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, she deserves the right to choose whether or not she will carry the child to term. If she wants to ride it out and give birth and keep or give up the baby, that’s great for her, I wish we were all that strong. But if she doesn’t want to keep the baby, and be reminded constantly, every day of her life of the choice she didn’t get to make, then she shouldn’t have to. Will she forget the rape? No, of course not. But at least she won’t have to look at the child as a bitter reminder of that horrible thing that happened. At least she won’t have to go through the pain of birth, one of the most rewarding experiences of being a woman, and leave the hospital with nothing but stretch marks, scars, a vagina that will never be the same again, and the memories of the child that was half hers.

If a woman has three children, little income, and no support from the man who impregnated her, she shouldn’t be forced to stretch herself even further to try and provide for yet another child. More so, a child should not be brought into a household where it cannot receive the care and attention it deserves.

If a college student makes a mistake, forgets to use a condom, and ends up pregnant in the middle of her sophomore year, she should not be forced to drop out of school to raise a child that one mistake caused.

Your arguments will always be:
• She could give the baby up for adoption.
• She should have thought of that before she had premarital sex.
• She should have thought of that before she got drunk at a party.
• She was asking for it.
• Abortion is murder.
• My God says it’s not okay.

But none of that matters. Even if it’s all true, it doesn’t matter when it comes right down to it. In the end, a baby is a life changing thing, whether conceived as a result of rape or consensual sex. Whether the mother is rich or poor. Whether the mother is 13 or 45. Whether the baby is given up for adoption or raised by the birth mother. Whether the mother is ready or not. Having a baby changes who you are. And if I don’t want to change, I shouldn’t have to.

My body is my body. My body does not belong to you. It does not belong to my mother and father. It does not belong to my husband. It does not belong to the government. It does not belong to a doctor. It does not belong to the people standing outside the abortion clinic, holding signs and humiliating and shaming women who are already scared, confused, and upset. My body does not belong to your god, your beliefs, or your religion. My body belongs to me and only me.

We live in a world where women are second class citizens. We live in a world where some countries don’t allow their women to drive, attend school, learn to read, vote, leave the house, or dress the way they want. We live in a world where sometimes the only thing that can keep a woman from being raped is a device with razor sharp teeth inserted into the vagina so that the rapist has to have it removed by a doctor. We live in a world where women are blamed for being raped because of what they were wearing or the way they were acting. We live in a world where we still have to discuss women’s rights like a foreign concept, like it shouldn’t be common sense. We live in a world where human beings are treated like less than human beings by other human beings.

I am a woman and my body belongs to me, and no one has any right to tell me what I can and cannot do with it.

Guys, this is my little brother, Reese. He just turned eight last March, and he is in second grade. He had found that he prefers guys to girls. When he told his friends that at recess, they threw rocks at him. Rocks. He came home crying, saying that his friends had called him names like “faggot” and “homo”. Second graders called him these names. I explained to him that it is perfectly okay to be gay, and that I will still love him no matter what. Unfortunately, my parents don’t agree. He’s been set apart from the family and his friends for his sexuality, that he has no control over. I’m not doing this for notes or to gain followers.
